WHOは8日、必須医薬品モデルリスト（WHO Model List of Essential Medicines）の最新版を公表しています。

WHO必須医薬品モデルリストは、開発途上国において多くの地域の人々が必要な医薬品を入手できないという1970年代の状況を背景に作成された もので、1977年に開催された「必須医薬品の選択に関するWHO専門委員会(WHO Expert Committee on the Selection of Essential Drugs)」の第1回報告として掲載（第1版当時、医薬品208種類収載）されたのが始まりです。

以後、医薬品供給不足の解消、適切な医療水準の確保など、開発途上国の医療のニーズを満たすものとして、約2年ごとの改訂が行われ、今年4月の専門家委員会での議論を踏まえた第19版と、2007年から作成されている小児用の医薬品リストの第5版が公表されました。

この必須医薬品モデルリストに採用されている医薬品は、公衆衛生上の課題（疾病の罹患率）や有効性と安全性のエビデンス、費用対効果などが選択の基準となっています。
つまり、必要最小限の医薬品目でいかにして地域住民の健康を守るかという観点が貫かれており、医療費の高騰や医薬品の不適切な使用が問題となっているわが国など、先進国にとっても学ぶべき点が多くなっています。
ところが今回、高価な抗がん剤やｃ型肝炎治療薬がのいくつがリストアップされ、注目の的となっています。日本でもつい最近承認され薬価待ちの超高価なC型肝炎治療薬のソホスブビル（ソバルディ）や、抗がん剤のトラスツズマブ（ハーセプチン）などがそうで、開発途上国などから価格の引き下げ圧力が高まりそうです。
